Guna Yala · Panama
San Blas, Panama
Three hundred and sixty-five islands under indigenous stewardship, almost none of them built upon.
Introduction
The Guna Yala archipelago is the rarest thing left in the Caribbean: an inhabited paradise that was never sold. The Guna people govern their own territory and have refused resort development for a century. What remains is an archipelago of palm islets, coral gardens and complete quiet — accessible only by yacht, and only with the right introductions.
Why Aurum here
San Blas rewards preparation and punishes improvisation. We work with Guna community leaders, hold the permissions, and provision from Panama City so nothing is asked of the islands themselves.
Best travel periods
December to April for the driest, calmest conditions. Green-season crossings are possible with flexible dates.
Recommended
Recommended experiences
- A day on an uninhabited island prepared for you alone
- Snorkelling the Coco Bandero and Holandés reefs
- A visit to a Guna community, arranged with respect and consent
- Fresh lobster brought alongside and cooked on deck
- Nights at anchor under an unlit sky
Yacht possibilities
Our own sailing yacht, Mamá-Isi — a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 with four cabins, wifi aboard and a captain who knows every anchorage in the archipelago. Self-sufficiency matters more here than length.
Villa possibilities
There are no luxury villas in Guna Yala, and there should not be. Journeys begin and end with private accommodation in Panama City.
